The domain name Guns.com has sold for a whopping $800,000 (U.S. Dollars). The sale of the premium, one-word domain name about guns was brokered by Moniker, according to DNJournal’s year-to-date sales reports.

The enormous selling price makes Guns.com the fourth-highest sale of a domain name to occur in 2010. The others are (in descending order): Flying.com, which took in $1.1million; Poker.org, which landed $1 million even; and Credit.fr (.FR is France’s ccTLD), which sold for $851,875 (all prices listed in U.S. Dollars).

The domain has a pagerank of 3 as of the most recent Google pagerank updates, and has been parked for at least a year and possibly much longer. This author has paid several visits to the domain during the year or so leading up to the sale, and has never seen the domain in any state that would qualify as developed or undergoing development. In other words, the domain itself with no website, commercial or otherwise, sold for nearly a million dollars.

This is significant news for premium domain name specialist Fat Lester of FatLester.com (and also this blog). The reason is that Fat Lester’s domain portfolio contains roughly a dozen or so domain names directly related to guns, ammunition sales, hunting and self defense.

The sale of the most generic, one-word, industry and product-specific term helps establish a market value for related and comparable domains, while establishing something of a price ceiling for other premium domains related in some way to the topic of guns and other weapons.

Comparable Domain Sales:

Other related domains that have sold in the past such as PaintballGun.com, which sold for $15,000 (USD) in the summer of 2007. The same domain (PaintballGun.com) went for $21,830 in 2004.

Puska.hu (.HU is the ccTLD for Hungary) also sold for more than $15,000. “Puska” is the Hungarian word for “gun”.

In a somewhat gun-related domain sale AR.com (as in “assault rifle”, and/or “Armalite” – the arms manufacturer company after which the “AR-15“, a very popular semi-automatic rifle, is named) sold for $225,000 in 2008.

In 2005, BBGuns.com took in a cool $40,000 before the exponential explosion of premium domain resale prices that occurred during the late 90′s. Outlaws.com commanded $33,000 that same year.

There are certainly a lot of details like that to take into consideration. That is a great point to bring up. I offer the thoughts above as general inspiration but clearly there are questions like the one you bring up where the most important thing will be working in honest good faith. I don?t know if best practices have emerged around things like that, but I am sure that your job is clearly identified as a fair game.
